The Japanese drugmaker will begin selling its Viagra tablets in the US market by October, as it prepares for the global patent cliff expected to come to an end.
A Japanese company which produces erectile dysfunction drugs called Viagra said it has already opened a U. S. pharmacy to sell such drugs to the general public.
Viagra, manufactured by Pfizer, is the first of its line of tablets to win the patent for Cialis, which is currently the only drug approved for men with a doctor’s prescription for erectile dysfunction.
The tablet, which is said to be priced at $3.50 for a supply of six tablets, will cost the company $3.55 a month if it does not win the patent, it said.
It said it would also begin selling the erectile dysfunction medication, which is also called Viagra, from its own online pharmacy.
It also said the company is selling the pills at half the price of the original Viagra in the US, for a total cost of $2.30 per month, making it the best-known erectile dysfunction medicine in the world.
Viagra, which is available by prescription in the UK and the US, is the first of a new class of drugs that contains sildenafil, or the same active ingredient as Viagra.
It has been available since the patent for Viagra was filed in 2003, but has been rejected twice by the US Food and Drug Administration.
The pill, which is expected to be sold by the end of the year, will be the first drug for which the US patent has been challenged, said Dr. Peter Dunn, medical adviser to pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, which is thought to be the world’s biggest drug maker by volume.
“This medicine is an excellent first step in the fight against this serious medical problem,” Dr. Dunn said in a conference call.
